Reading at Home - The goal of reading with your child is to give your child daily reading practice so that he or she will not only improve their reading skills but also foster a love of reading. Please try your best to read with your child daily.
Each night your child will bring home a book in their AR bag that is on their reading level. Your child will read this book nightly. Along with their AR book, they may read other books, magazines, etc. for at least 20 minutes a night. Throughout the week your child should experience the following types of reading with their books: independent (read the book silently), shared (alternate reading with an adult), model (adult reads entire book to child), and oral (read the entire book to an adult). Keep a record of reading on the AR reading log. The log is turned in on Friday. For every 100 minutes read at home, your child will receive a bead that will go on their reading necklace that is kept in our classroom until the end of the year. Your child is to bring their AR book, along with the AR reading log, back to school every day because we will be doing activities during the school day that pertain to their AR book.
Guided Reading - Guided reading is a time set aside for small group reading practice with the teacher. While I am meeting with small groups other children will be participating in Daily Rotations. This is a program to help children develop into fluent readers and writers.
